    More MSO’s Launch Internet Acess Services
    This week, three major MSO’s announced systems that just launched commercial Internet access services.

    Cox Communications introduced the @Home service to the Mission Viejo area of Orange County, California. The service will be offered at $35 per month and a one-time installation fee of $150.

    In addition to Orange County, TCI Cablevision launched @Home service to Hartford, Connecticut neighborhoods including West Hartford, Simsbury, Bloomfield, East Hartford, and Windsor. Subscribers will pay $39.95 per month and a one-time installation fee of $150.

    Last, Cablevision Systems has launced cable modem service in Oyster Bay, New York to 15,000 homes. Service is planned to be expanded to Long Island, NY to pass more than 150,000 homes. Cablevision will offer access via Bay Networks (formerly LANcity)’s LCP cable modem and Hewlett Packard’s networking equipment. Content will be provided by Optimum Online, a packaged service that includes Road Runner service and Optimum’s locally focused content.

    Cablevision plans to use Road Runner service to provide content for future Internet access services. Cablevision is the first MSO or system operator outside of Time Warner to provide the service.

    Subscribers to Optimum Online will have the option to purchase or lease a cable modem. If they choose to buy, Cablevision will charge $295 for the modem and pay an access fee of $34.95 per month. For those that lease, there will be a $44.95 fee for modem use and access. There will also be a one-time installation fee of $150.

    Philips to Distribute NetGame’s Cable Modem
    Philips Broadband Networks will provide worldwide distribution of NetGame’s Nemo cable modem. The low cost two way modem will be part of a Philip’s cable modem solution that includes Nemo for residential services and Com21’s ComPORT cable modem for business services. Details of the agreement between Philips and NetGame have not been finalized, but it is expected that their partnership will include more than just marketing and distribution.

    Bay Networks (formerly LANcity)’s Founder, Rouzbeh Yassini Resigns
    Last week, Rouzbeh Yassini, founder of Bay Networks (formerly LANcity) and presently Vice President of Bay Networks’ Internet Telecom Division announced that he will resign his post. Yassini will remain as VP at Bay until March and then continue as a consultant through 1997.

    Yassini has proven himself as a true visionary. He was a key factor in the overwhelming success of Bay Networks (formerly LANcity) and his charismatic and colorful personality will be missed. All of us at the CATV CyberLab wish him well.
