    Time Warner Launches Road Runner in Portland, Maine
    Last week, Time Warner commercially launched Road Runner to businesses and residential customers in Portland, Maine. Prior to launching, Time Warner had expanded the Internet access trial to include over 500 online businesses and homes, serving over 1500 users.

    Road Runner is being offered to businesses for $79.95 per month for a stand alone connection and for $299.95 for a LAN connection. The unlimited Internet access service is being offered to residential subscribers for $39.95 per month, which includes cable modem rental. For residential subscribers of Time Warner's AXS cable television service, Road Runner is only $35.95 per month. One time installation fees were not disclosed, but it is expected that Time Warner is charging between $99 - $150.

    Time Warner plans to provide free connectivity to public schools and libraries and to some private schools.

    Time Warner is using Toshiba's data communications network, which includes their cable modem known as PCX. PCX supports 8.192 Mbps downstream and 2.048 Mbps upstream. TW's Portland system is the first to commercially deploy Toshiba's cable modem.

    In addition to Road Runner's national content and infrastructure, subscribers to the service will have access to a plethora of local content. Local sites and services will be provided by the Maine HealthWeb, the Portland Museum of Art, the Press Herald Online, WGME Online, and Maine Business Online.

    Nortel to Provide Titus with Digital Switches & Cable Telephony Equipment
    Nortel Japan has signed a 5-year agreement to provide Titus [Japanese MSO] cable telephony equipment.

    Nortel, in conjunction with Arris Interactive will supply Titus with digital switches including the DMS-100 and the DMS-10, and Arris' Cornerstone Voice cable telephony system. Nortel's DMS-100 is a central office digital switch that can support 100,000 subscribers. The DMS-10 supports 12,000 lines.

    The first phase of the agreement calls for switches to be provided to a current cable telephony trial in Kashiwa, and to systems in Western Tokyo and Sagamihara. The Kashiwa trial, which began in December of 1996, is expected to be commercial in June, 1997. Commercial launches in Western Tokyo and Sagamihara are planned for 1998.

    Currently, Titus has licenses to operate 9 cable systems including networks in Maebashi, Isezaki, Kashiwa, Sagamihara, and four municipalities in Tokyo.

    Nortel Japan has emerged as the leading non-Japanese supplier of digital switches in Japan. Last February, Nortel signed a similar 5-year deal with Jupiter, the largest Japanese MSO. In addition, the company supplies NTT, IDC, and many financial institutions and manufacturing companies.

    Vision.com & Cogeco To Test Cable Telephony in Quebec
    Vision.com has announced that the organization will work with Cogeco Cable to begin testing cable telephony at Cogeco's cable system in Trois-Rivieres, Quebec.

    The 6-month trial, which will begin in May of 1997, will test four different technologies. Announced suppliers for the trial include Nortel and Siemens Electric.

    The project, which will include 200 subscribers will cost an estimated $2 million.

    Vision.com is a research and business development consortium of Canadian MSOs.

    US West To Build FTTC Network in Scottsdale, Arizona
    US West Communications has signed an agreement with an unnamed community developer to build a FTTC network that will offer voice, video and data services to a community of 7,500 homes in Scottsdale, Arizona. The Scottsdale community, known as DC Ranch is a 8300-acre area located at the foothills of the McDowell Mountains.

    US West must receive approval from the city to get a cable franchise.

    Bresnan Testing Cable Modems in Marquette, Michigan
    Bresnan Communications recently announced that they are testing data communications over their cable system in Marquette, Michigan. They plan to launch commercial services after a 60-day trial that is due to include 100 users.

    The service, which features Bay Networks (formerly LANcity)'s cable modem will cost cable subscribers $34.95 a month and non-subscribers will pay $44.95 per month. Subscribers will have the option to purchase or lease the cable modem. Bresnan will charge the wholesale price of $395 if they want to purchase the modem or subscribers can pay a $15 per month lease.

    GAD Line to Supply Cable Telephony Equipment to Elbit in Tainjin, China
    GAD Line has announced that they will supply Elbit, a cable operator in Tainjin, China with cable telephony equipment. Installation of the equipment will begin this month.

    Motorola To Supply Cable Modems to TV Cable Bogota
    Motorola has announced that they have signed a contract with TV Cable Bogota that calls for Motorola to provide CyberSURFR cable modems for the Colombian system operator's upcoming commercial launch of data services.

    TV Cable Bogota passes 150,000 homes.
