Alcatel to Supply Lyonnaise with Telephony Equipment
Alcatel will supply the French operator Lyonnaise Cable with cable telephony equipment including Alcatel's E10 central office switch. Lyonnaise is planning to launch data and telephony to the Annecy region in the first quarter of 1998. The operator will use Motorola equipment for data.

In last week's issue, the Broadband Bob Report reported that Lyonnaise has filed a complaint against French Telecom for assessing unreasonably high network access costs. The ruling will determine if Lyonnaise will be able to meet their early '98 launch schedule.

Charter Testing Com21 Cable Modems in Alhambra, California
Leslie Ellis of MultiChannel News reported last week that Charter Communications was testing Com21 cable modems in Alhambra, California. The current trial includes 20 participants and is expected to quickly expand to service 50 users. Earthlink is providing content and connectivity, and CompUSA is assisting with installations. The system, which passes 300,000 homes in the Los Angeles area has been testing data over cable since March.

Other Charter systems are testing telco return cable modems. Charter has already entered into agreements with Scientific Atlanta, NextLevel and New Media Communication.

Ellis reported that Com21 shipped their first "commercial" modem in April, and that the company is expecting to reach $5 million in revenues by the third quarter of this year. Com21 equipment is being tested at about 10 different cable systems.
