Prime Cable has agreed to purchase 30,000 Com21 ComPORT cable modems over the next two years. Prime plans to deploy the modems in several markets including Las Vegas. Shipments on the order began in June.

EMD Releases Security Software for Cable Modem Users
EMD Enterprises has released client software that protects cable modem users from exposing their hard drives to fellow users. The software, known as EMD Armor 97, uses a multi-layer security net that secures systems via validation, secure Internet modes, online encryption, Desktop Firewall features and IP filtering. EMD Armor 97 allows users to share data through file sharing, but restricts unauthorized access.
EMD Armor 97 runs US$79.00. The software can be downloaded from the company's web site.

A2000 Launches Cable Telephony Service in the Netherlands
Dutch cable operator, A2000 has launched cable telephony service in the Netherlands. The service is initially being offered in Purmerand. Within the next few months, A2000 plans to expand the service to include Zaanstad, Hilversum, and parts of Amsterdam. The service offers 50% lower prices for local calls between A2000 subscribers.
A2000 has 500,000 subscribers and a penetration rate over 95%.
Jupiter Launches Cable Telephony Service in Sumitomo, Japan
On July 1, J-COM Suginami launched cable telephony services in suburban Tokyo. The service known as CablePhone offers customers a minimum of 15% savings on local calls and up to 40% off for long distance calls.
J-COM Suginami is owned by Jupiter Telecommunications. Cable telephony equipment for the service is supplied by Arris Interactive.
CATV CyberLab Adds Cable Telephony Information to Web Site
The CATV CyberLab has launched a cable telephony section on its web site at http://www.catv.org The new section features links to vendors, a list of operators that have applied for local exchange certification, a list of some trials and deployments and information on the PCS over cable market. The section is the first and only collection of web pages providing market information on cable telephony.
The cable telephony section is slim compared to the information that the CATV CyberLab provides on data over cable. The CATV CyberLab is encouraging the Internet community to contribute to the intelligence.

Cox to Use Teltrust to Support Cable Telephony Services
Cox Communications has signed a renewable contract with Teltrust Communications Services that calls for the wholesale telecom service provider to provide Cox with a variety of services. Initially, Teltrust will provide live operator assistance , a nationwide directory with call completion, and third party verification.
