1. ARS Tracking Broadband Market
ARS has introduced a tracking service of the broadband marketplace that includes subscriber and market share data for the leading service providers. The firm finds that Time Warner became the largest cable modem service provider in the U.S. during the third quarter, adding more than 250,000 subs during the period to reach 1.7 million total subscribers. TW took the lead from AT&T, which added a market-low 3% to its subscriber base over Q'3, reaching 1,426,000 total subs.

ARS has said that Charter reported the largest perecntage gain during Q'3 at 25.4%. Cablevision had the top penetration rate for the quarter at 15.3%, while Insight reported the lowest rate among tier one MSOs at 5.1%

Overall, the 5 largest MSOs in the U.S. added 624,000 cable modem subs to reach a total of 5.1 million subs in Q'3, up from 519,000 in Q'2, and down from 770,000 in Q'1. The five largest DSL providers in the U.S. added 392,000 subs to reach a total of 3.3 million in Q'3, up from 354,000 in Q'2, and down from 551,000 in Q'1.

2. Terayon Introduces DOCSIS 1.1 Headends with Advanced PHY
Terayon has introduced the BW 3500 and BW3200, DOCSIS 1.1 headends with the advanced PHY specified in DOCSIS 2.0 for large and small cable operators, respectively. The 3500 CMTS is a chassis based design with slots for 14 individual line cards. The design features include hot-swappable line cards and system-wide redundancy. The 3200 is configurable from 2 to 4 rack units in height. Both units are backwards compatible with DOCSIS 1.0 and 1.1 systems.

3. Big Pipe to Provide 3rd Party Cable ISP Services
Big Pipe has teamed with IP Applications and Friendly Technologies to introduce a cable ISP service that will offer cable providers with customer acquisition and rentention, access, provisioning, billing, accounting management and customer care. The venture is oddly introduced in the wake of failures among the majority of third-party cable ISPs.

Big Pipe, a Shaw company, is a transport and Internet connectivity provider. IP Applications is a provider of outsourced Internet services and Friendly Technologies is a developer of client and server software solutions.

4. Core Integrates Mentis Solution to Support Legacy Billing
Core Networks has announced that it has integrated its provisioning and subscriber management system with Mentis' Real-Time Response System to support connectivity between Core's CoreOS solution and billing systems such as those supplied by Convergys, CSG, and DST Innovis. The duo plans to develop a solution that will provide service kiosks, real-time billing for VoIP and VOD, and automation of service availability check, order entry, subscriber self-activation, and ongoing support and service upgrades.
