1. Conexant Shipping Newest Cable Modem Chip
Conexant Systems has said that it is shipping its InfoSurge CX24943 cable modem chip, a single monolithic system on a chip design that includes dual processing engine, an 802.3 10/100 MAC with a MII for home networking, a USB 1.1 transceiver, a host interface to accommodate VoIP and wireless networking, and an integrated upstream/downstream PHY. The processors include an ARM9 application processor running at 225 MHz and a ARM9 MAC processor running at 144 MHz. In the PHY, the downstream receiver includes a 10-bit A/D that accepts a direct IF signal (at 44 or 36 MHz) and a 4/16/64/256 QAM demodulator with Annex A, B, and C FEC. It also includes an 11-bit D/A converter that can accomodate 65 MHz of bandwidth for EuroDOCSIS and DVB apps, and a QPSK/16 QAM burst upstream modulator.

The technology delivers 29,000 packets per second throughout regardless of packet size. The cable line rate of 38 Mbps can be maintained even with packets as small as 160 bytes.

The chip can be used for Ethernet, USB, PCI, and computer controlled cable modems, multifunction home networking products, set-tops, SOHO equipment, and VoIP products. It can also be used for software apps used in router products such as security firewalls, advanced bridging and routing protocols, NAT, DHCP servers, and wireless 802.11b access points.

The application software can be implemented to upgrade deployed InfoSurge cable modem devices, improving performance and functionality.

Conexant is offering a reference design for DOCSIS/EuroDOCSIS 1.0/1.1 Ethernet, USB, or PCI cable modems.

The CX24943 chip is packaged in a 17mm x 17mm 228-pin PBGA. It goes for $26.50 per unit in quantities of 10,000.
