1. @Home Cuts Off AT&T and Charter, Other MSOs Still Talking
Last weekend, @Home exercised its court approved ability to break its
affiliate contracts and shut down service by terminating service to AT&T
and Charter. As a result, 995,000 subscribers lost service. However, the
two operators had successfully migrated 460,500 [330,000 of 850,000 of
AT&T's @Home subs and 130,500 of 145,000 Charter's @Home's subs] of their
@Home subscribers to their own respective networks. AT&T@Home subscribers
in Oregon, Washington, and metro Dallas are back online. Customers in San
Francisco and Illinois are scheduled to be back today and tomorrow, with
subscribers in Denver and Salt Lake City added on Wednesday. Customers in
Hartford, Pittsuburgh, Sacramento, and the Rocky Mountain region will be up
on Thursday, while subs in Michigan are slated to be back on-board on
Friday. Charter has said that it will need up to four weeks to move the
full remainder of its subscribers to its PipeLine network.
AT&T and Charter plan to credit subscribers with 2 days of free service for
every day they are without access. For subscribers that are down for
several days, AT&T will provide free dialup service while waiting. As part
of the shift off the @Home network, subscribers are losing their @Home.com
email addresses. Switched AT&T subs will get an email address with an
@attbi.com domain and former Charter@Home subs will get a charter.net email
address. Usernames will be unchanged.
While cutting AT&T and Charter from the @Home network, some Comcast
subscribers, mainly in Connecticut, were accidently dropped. @Home has
been working to bring these subs back online.
Comcast, Cox, Rogers, and more than 10 other smaller MSO affiliates are
still in negotiations with @Home's bondholders to keep their connectivity
alive. Excluding Rogers, these affiliates will likely need months to move
subscribers to their own networks. Rogers is likely to bail out of
negotiations since it claims that it can migrate all of its @Home subs to
its own network within a few hours. Further, it says that it has already
moved 60% of its subscribers' email addresses to the rogers.com domain.
AT&T is attempting to sabotage the bondholders' stragey by threatening to
rescind its petty $307 million offer to acquire @Home if affiliate
negotiations continue for much longer than the ten days it will need to
migrate all of its subs to its own network. Other affiliates also tried to
stop the bondholder's shut down effort last week by offering to outbid AT&T
for the company. However, the offer was not delivered because AT&T and
Charter were cut off.
Shareholders have been opposed to any shut down of the company or service
since they can only capture value from their shares if the company is
resurrected. However, the impact of the bondholder's play ironically
increased the OTC value of @Home shares by more than 25%, an almost 2 cent
per share increase.
DSL providers are attempting to convert @Home subs to its platform by
offering them discounts and rebates. Covad has said that it is offering a
$225 rebate to @Home subs, covering installation and equipment costs. A
one year service agreement must be signed by January 31 and rebate forms
must be postmarked by February 28. The provider claims that installations
are completed within an average of 11 days. During downtime, Covad is
offering new subs 10 free hours of dialup services.
Qwest has announced that it will provide @Home subs with $300 worth of free
services and can complete installs between 10 and 15 days.
