2. Motorola Introduces Provisioning System
Motorola has introduced an open OSS for provisioning
that automates the steps involved in service creation,
activation, management, and billing of voice, video and
data. The technology consists of a modular architecture
that includes a service provisioning module, an IP
management module, a device provisioning module, and a
DOCSIS device management module. The provisioning system
integrates with legacy operational support systems and
customer back office application. It allows providers to
define services using abstract rules.
The Service Provisioning Module provides a service
catalog that enables service creation and activation. The
IP Management Module brings users online and enables
management of subscriber growth. It includes DNS, DHCP,
TFTP and TOD servers. The Device Provisioning Module
provides automated provisioning of DOCSIS/PacketCable
subscriber access devices. The DOCSIS Device Management
Module provides network management for cable modems, CMTS
platforms, MTAs, and set-tops.

4. EarthLink & AOL Launch in More TW Markets
EarthLink and AOL have launched their respective high speed
data services over Time Warner cable systems in Palm Springs,
Cathedral City, Rancho Mirage, Palm Desert, Indian Wells, La
Quinta, Indio, and Coachella, California (120,000 HHP);
Dutchess, Orange, and Ulster, New York; and San Diego
(250,000 HHP).
AOL has struggled to meet analysts' expectations while
migrating its customers from dial-up to broadband. Last
month, the company's CEO stepped down. Co-CEO Robert Pittman
has been tapped to lead the provider. AOL has been criticized
for failing to deliver compelling broadband content, to take
advantage of synergies between it and Time Warner, to land
access agreements with other major MSOs, and to make broadband
access as profitable as dial-up. The company is encouraging
new broadband subscribers to keep their AOL dialup subscriptions
as a back-up connectivity plan.
