MSOs Report Increased Subs
AT&T ended the second quarter with 223,600 cable telephony subs (includes
MediaOne), up from 137,800 the previous period. The MSO installed an
average of 1,300 new subs per day during Q'2, ending the quarter with 1,600
per day.
Cablevision Lightpath reports 11,053 residential telephony customers among
135,500 homes passed (8.2% penetration) in Long Island and Fairfield County,
Connecticut. The provider has said that it has 58,180 commercial access lines
in Long Island.
Cox Communications has announced that it ended the second quarter with
59,793 residential telephony subs from 870,213 homes passed (6.9%
penetration). The MSO has 92,705 lines, with 1.55 lines on average per
customer.
RCN has reported 95,065 on-net telephony customers among 830,989 homes
passed.
NTL has said that it ended the second quarter with 2,378,800 on-net telephony
subscribers (NTL: 571,700; Comcast, ComTel and Diamond: 766,400;
ConsumerCo: 1,040,700] among 7,321,500 homes passed.
Time Warner Telecom reports a 32% increase in revenues to $131.8 million in
Q'2 among its 22 commercial telephony operations.
AT&T to Offer Telephony over Insight's Networks
AT&T has signed a deal with Insight Communications allowing it to offer
telephony services over the MSO's cable systems, which serve 1.5 million video
subs. AT&T will pay Insight a monthly per line access fee for the local loop, in
addition to fees for marketing, customer installation and billing support. AT&T
will be responsible for the installation, maintenance and capital costs involved
with the deployment of the headend and back-office connectivity. Insight will
take care of network upgrade expenses.
AT&T will deploy Arris' Cornerstone network.
Insight's cable systems are primarily located in Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky, and
Ohio. The first telephony offering is scheduled for Q'1 of next year in Louisville,
Kentucky.

Strategis Group Releases Cable Telephony Study
Strategis Group has released a new market study entitled U.S. Cable
Telephony. The report projects that local cable telephony revenues will increase
from $133 million this year to $2.67 billion by 2005. Cable telephony
customers are expected to increase from 300,000 today to 12.5 million.
HFC telephony equipment revenue is projected to increase from about $485
million this year to almost $3 billion in 2005.

RCN Expands Services in Boston and NJ Markets
RCN has expanded its voice, video and data service area in metro Boston to
include Burlington, Allston, Dedham and Arlington. The provider has received
regulatory approval to offer its services in parts of Hudson County [Cliffside
Park, Bayonne, Hoboken, and Jersey City] and Bergen County [Guttenberg,
Fairview, Ft. Lee and North Bergen].
