Megacable, Mexico's second largest MSO has received approval from the Mexican government to offer local phone services in Mexico City, Guadalajara, and Monterey. Megacable plans to deploy a local exchange network with nine-advanced fiber optic collector rings and a fiber backbone that would expand from Mexico City to Monterey and Guadalajara.
The service, which is scheduled to launch within the next six months, will become Telemex's first local carrier competitor. Telmex, which was privatized in 1990, enjoyed a state-mandated monopoly until last year.
Megacable, which passes more than 600,000 homes has already launched data services. RCN International owns 40% of the MSO.
